Adigo participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, September 19. More than 10,000 people filled Denver’s City Park in a fight to end Alzheimer’s. This was the 26th walk for Denver and this year’s numbers made Denver’s walk one of the largest in the entire country.
Right now, 65,000 in Colorado are fighting the disease. “This is the only disease in the top 10 causes of death in our country that can’t be prevented, cured or slowed,” said Linda Mitchell, President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado.
The stigma and negative perception are lifting, strides are being made. Peggy Snook, one Adigo walker, said “We feel a real sense of solidarity here. There are so many who refuse to let their loved ones be defined by this devastating disease. Certainly there are many fears, but together we are finding support and ways to cope.” Random walkers were asked to announce the name of the person they were walking for as they crossed the finish line, one Adigo representative said her Grandfather’s name.
The 2014 walk raised $1.1 million. For this year, they are still tallying totals. Funds raised go to research and support of Alzheimer’s. To learn more go to alz.org.
